Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday called PM Narendra Modi and strongly condemned the terror attack in J&K's Pahalgam which claimed 26 lives.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Putin conveyed deepest condolences on the loss of innocent lives and offered full support to India in the fight against terrorism.

"President Putin @KremlinRussia_E called PM @narendramodi and strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, India. He conveyed deepest condolences on the loss of innocent lives and expressed full support to India in the fight against terrorism. He emphasised that the perpetrators of the heinous attack and their supporters must be brought to justice," Jaiswal posted on X.

"Both leaders reiterated their commitment to further deepen Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. PM conveyed greetings to President Putin on the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day and invited him for the Annual Summit to be held in India later in the year," he added.

Earlier, India launched efforts to expand the reservoir capacity of two hydroelectric projects in the Himalayan region of Kashmir, according to a report by Reuters.

"India did not inform Pakistan about the work at the Salal and Baglihar projects, which is being done for the first time since they were built in 1987 and 2008/09, respectively, as the treaty had blocked such work," the sources told Reuters.

The process, aimed at clearing sediment buildup, began on Thursday and is being led by the country’s largest hydropower producer, NHPC Ltd, along with local authorities, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Additionally, PM Modi met Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh on Monday to discuss the evolving security situation.

Earlier, PM Modi held a meeting with Indian Air Force Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh on Sunday. The meeting came a day after PM Modi met Indian Navy chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi.
