In a horrific late-night crash, two cousins were burnt alive after their Toyota Fortuner SUV collided with a truck and caught fire in outer Delhi’s Rani Bagh area early Thursday morning, NDTV reported.

The incident occurred around 3 am, when the speeding SUV rammed into a truck that was moving ahead of it. Police sources said that the collision was so powerful that the Fortuner’s bonnet got wedged beneath the truck and was dragged for nearly 400–500 metres before the vehicle burst into flames.

The victims have been identified as 20-year-old Henry, a resident of Meera Bagh, and 21-year-old Dipanshu Chandela from Paschim Vihar. Both Henry and Dipanshu were trapped inside when the SUV went up in flames, reports said.

Both were charred to death before help could arrive. Their bodies were later identified by family members.

A relative told NDTV that the two had left home around 2:30 am to drive to Murthal for a late-night meal, a plan that tragically ended minutes later.

Police said that a distress call was received in the case at around 3:10 am, after which, a team from Rani Bagh Police Station rushed to the scene. The firefighters managed to contain the fire but Henry and Dipanshu had lost their lives till then. The bodies were sent for post-mortem and later handed over to their families.

The truck driver was detained for questioning. He reportedly told the police that he was travelling from Mundka to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar when the SUV hit his vehicle from behind.

A case has been registered and experts are examining whether overspeeding, fatigue or any mechanical fault led to the fatal collision. The vehicles have been seized for a mechanical inspection, the results of which are awaited, the NDTV report further said.

Henry’s father works in the mobile tower installation business, and the family had earlier lost his elder brother in an accident at a similar age. Dipanshu was the son of a local property dealer and is survived by his parents and a sister.
