Massive crackdown in J&K: Police target cross-border terror networks, seize digital evidence

In a major counter-terror operation, police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district launched a large-scale crackdown on Saturday against individuals allegedly operating from Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (PoK). The coordinated action is part of an intensified drive to dismantle the underground networks supporting militancy in the Valley.

According to officials, the operation followed a high-level meeting chaired by the Director General of Police (DGP). Multiple Cordon and Search Operations (CASOs) were conducted across several parts of Kulgam based on credible intelligence inputs.

The searches targeted individuals suspected of maintaining communication with relatives across the border, facilitating funding, and providing logistical support to terror groups. Several overground workers (OGWs) and relatives of Jammu and Kashmir nationals based in Pakistan were booked under relevant legal provisions for aiding anti-national activities, officials said.

Police teams also recovered digital devices and incriminating documents believed to have been used for subversive purposes. A senior officer described the operation as part of an ongoing campaign to “completely dismantle the support structures of terror in South Kashmir,” adding that similar measures would continue until the networks facilitating cross-border militancy were neutralised.

Meanwhile, the Counter-Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) intensified surprise inspections at several jails to curb the use of illegal communication channels by inmates. “Specific inputs prompted joint inspections of barracks and belongings of prisoners, in coordination with jail authorities, to detect any unauthorised cell phones or materials aiding subversive activities,” a CIK official said.

Security forces on Saturday foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, killing two terrorists during a joint operation.

According to the Army’s White Chinar Corps, the counter-infiltration mission, codenamed “Operation Pimple,” was launched on November 7 after receiving specific intelligence inputs about suspected movement in the area.

“Two terrorists have been neutralised by the security forces in the ongoing operation. Search of the area is in progress,” the Chinar Corps said in a post on X. It added that alert troops had spotted suspicious activity near the LoC and challenged the infiltrators, prompting them to open fire. The troops retaliated, leading to an exchange of fire in which both terrorists were killed.

The Army said that contact with the terrorists was established shortly after the operation began and that the area was being combed to ensure no further infiltration attempts had occurred.
