Operation Guddar: Two soldiers killed, two terrorists gunned down in Kulgam

Officials said the search operation turned into an encounter after terrorists opened fire at security forces’ positions.

Two Army soldiers were killed and another injured in an encounter with terrorists in Kulgam’s Guddar forest on Monday, officials said.

The gunfight broke out during a joint search operation launched by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF based on specific intelligence inputs. The operation has been codenamed Operation Guddar.

“Based on specific intelligence input by JKP, a joint search operation was launched by IndianArmy, Jammu Kashmir Police & CRPF Srinagar in Guddar forest of Kulgam,” the Army’s Chinar Corps said in a post on X. It added that vigilant troops spotted suspicious movement and challenged it, after which terrorists opened fire, “prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire.”

Three Army personnel were injured in the encounter, of whom two later died in hospital.

Officials confirmed that two terrorists, linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba, were also killed in the operation. Initial reports suggest one of them was a local militant while the other, believed to be a foreigner, operated under the code name ‘Rehman Bhai’.

Earlier, Kashmir Zone Police had said on X, “Based on specific intelligence, an encounter has started in the Guddar forest of the Kulgam. SOG of J&K Police, Army and CRPF on the job. Further details to follow.”
