PM Modi says obesity is not just a personal challenge but a national concern that requires collective action.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi nominated ten prominent personalities to join his efforts to combat obesity in the country, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his happiness.

“I’m very happy to join the campaign against obesity launched by PM @narendramodi ji. Obesity causes a number of lifestyle-related health issues like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, strokes & breathing problems, not to mention mental health conditions like anxiety & depression. Today I’m nominating these 10 people to join the PM’s campaign against obesity & requesting them to nominate a further 10 people each to take this fight forward," the CM posted on X.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi nominated industrialists Anand Mahindra and Nandan Nilekani, sportspersons Manu Bhaker and Mirabai Chanu, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, MP Mohanlal and Sudha Murthy, BJP leader Dinesh Lal Yadav, actor R Madhavan and singer Shreya Ghosal,  to spread awareness and inspire others to make similar changes in their lives.

Besides the J&K CM, industrialist Anand Mahindra and actor R Madhavan also expressed support for the campaign. Both praised the initiative and nominated 10 more individuals to join the movement, further spreading awareness about the importance of combating obesity for better health.

Thanking PM Modi for his call to action, Anand Mahindra said, “To achieve the mission of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, we not only need a strong economy but a healthy population as well… Making small changes, like using even 10% less cooking oil can build up to big contributions; be it to your well-being, to your wallet, or to a healthier world."

Madhavan also expressed his gratitude to PM Modi for launching the awareness programme.  "I thank the Honorable Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodi Ji, for launching this essential and impactful awareness program to inspire our nation toward better health. I am honored to be nominated to help spread this important message,” he posted on X.

The celebrities also nominated 10 personalities to join this initiative.

In his Mann Ki Baat broadcast on Sunday, he said, “During the opening of the National Games in Dehradun, I raised a very important topic, which has started a new discussion in the country – this topic is ‘obesity’. To become a fit and healthy nation, we will certainly have to deal with the problem of obesity.”

He also said that obesity is not just a personal challenge but a national concern that requires collective action.
