Okhla is one of the 70 assembly constituencies in India's national capital of Delhi and falls under the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. This urban constituency, located in the South East Delhi district near the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, encompasses areas such as Madanpur Khadar, Khizrabad, Jasola, Aali, and Taimur Nagar.

As one of Delhi's oldest inhabited regions, Okhla lies along the banks of the Yamuna River. The constituency went to polls on February 5 along with the rest of Delhi in a single phase and recorded a voter turnout of 54.96 percent.

What happened in past Okhla Assembly elections?

In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Amanatullah Khan won the Okhla seat with 130,367 votes, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Brahm Singh, who received 58,540 votes, and Congress's Parvez Hashmi, who secured 5,123 votes.

Similarly, in the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, Amanatullah Khan of AAP emerged victorious with 104,271 votes, while BJP's Brahm Singh garnered 39,739 votes, and Congress's Asif Muhammad Khan received 20,135 votes.

Triangular contest in Okhla Assembly constituency

The contest in the Okhla Assembly seat, initially seen as a direct fight between the BJP and the AAP, turned into a three-cornered contest as the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM declared Shifa Ur Rehman as its candidate. Rehman is an accused in the 2020 North East Delhi riots.

While taking on the likes of Ariba Khan of Congress and AAP's Amanatullah Khan was no easy task, Rehman found support from Owaisi who campaigned for the party in the Muslim-dominated localities of the constituency. The most densely populated areas of the Okhla assembly have a high Muslim population density, especially in areas like Zakir Nagar, Joga Bai, Batla House, Abul Fazal Enclave, Noor Nagar, Gaffar Manzil, Haji Colony, Okhla Vihar and Shaheen Bagh.
