Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 16 said that Oil India has found hydrocarbon presence in Assam’s Namrup Borhat-1 well, where the state government has a significant stake.
Sarma said that the discovery makes Assam the first state to be a direct oil producer in the country, calling it a “proud moment”.
“This discovery makes Assam the first State Govt to be a direct oil producer, makes exploration efforts successful, empowers Assam with revenue & royalty and ensures steady availability of energy for the country,” he said in a post on X.

The well is located in the Dibrugarh district of Assam at a depty of 4,333 meters. The discovery, which is considered to be a major breakthrough, is set to provide a boost to India’s energy sector.
The state government, which has a stake in the exploration of hydrocarbons, will likely receive royalties and profits generated from the well.
