Former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai has criticised YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as BeerBiceps, for his jokes and questions on India’s Got Latent, hosted by Samay Raina.
During an interaction with a contestant on India’s Got Latent, Allahbadia asked, “Would you rather watch your parents have sex for the rest of your life or join in once to make it stop?” A clip of the exchange soon went viral on social media, drawing widespread condemnation for its perceived tastelessness.
Pai termed questions "distasteful" and "beyond the bounds of acceptable humour".
While talking to CNN-News18, Pai said, “It’s obscene and unnecessary and crossing the line. It’s sick. Pervert mind. People should cut him out, not subscribe to his channel. This is crossing the line. Family and family relations and religion is something that cannot be joked about,” he said.
Pai (66) also stressed the need for self-regulation in comedy. “There should be a self-restraint. Dark humour is carrying it too far. Freedom of speech should be exercised the right way," he said.
He even said that the organisers of the show must also be penalised.
An individual named Akshit Singh has filed a complaint against Allahbadia, and the host of the show, Samay Raina, for “promoting obscenity”. The complaint is under process by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India. The Ministry has directed Amarendra Singh, Deputy Secretary, MIB, to “take relevant actions on the show makers”.
Another complaint has been filed with Mumbai Police Commissioner and the State Women and Child Commission. The written complaints are against podcaster and YouTuber BeerBiceps aka Ranveer Allahbadia, ‘The Rebel Kid’ Apoorva Mukhija, shows host and comedian Samay Raina.
The complaint accuses them of using offensive language and calls for strict action. However, no official offence has been registered yet.
On Monday, Allahbadia issued an apology for his remark. “My comment was not just inappropriate, it was not even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I’m sorry,” he said.
His apology came shortly after Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, commented on the controversy, cautioning against the misuse of free speech — though he admitted he had yet to watch the clip himself.
