Russian embassy official Roman Babushkin said that US may ease its stance on India and may not impose additional 25 percent tariffs on exports for buying oil from Moscow following positive talks between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last week.
"The positive outcomes of President Putin's visit to the US last week are that, according to reports, President Trump has decided not to impose additional tariffs on India. Whatever happens globally, we are capable of resolving them for the mutual satisfaction with India, and we will continue our partnership despite external threats,” Babushkin, Chargé d'Affaires of the Russian Embassy in India said.
Last week, ahead of his meeting with Putin, Trump had indicated the likely change of stance on the secondary tariffs imposed on New Delhi’s exports.
Russia backs India's stand, says dispute with Pakistan a 'bilateral issue'
"Well, he (Russian President Vladimir Putin) lost an oil client, so to speak, which is India, which was doing about 40 percent of the oil. China, as you know, is doing a lot…And if I did what's called a secondary sanction, or a secondary tariff, it would be very devastating from their standpoint. If I have to do it, I'll do it. Maybe I won't have to do it,” Trump had said on August 15.
The US president made the remarks in an interview with Fox News aboard Air Force One en route to Alaska for a high-stakes summit meeting with Putin.
With its oil tariffs on India, the Trump administration sought to force Russia to the table to negotiate an end to its war with Ukraine, White House press secretary said on August 20.
Russian official says Indian goods welcome if US tariffs hurt exports
“President Trump has taken decisive steps to bring this war to a close, including sanctions on India and other measures,” Leavitt said during a press briefing. “He has made it clear that he wants to see the war end swiftly and does not support delaying meetings or negotiations.”
The remarks were made a few hours after Trump met Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House
Meanwhile, the Russian embassy official said that the remaining S-400 missile system will be delivered “according to the schedule".
