The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the Kerala student ragging case and asked the state government to submit a report within 10 days.

A video of the incident, which surfaced on Thursday, showed the complainant, a first-year student, tied to a cot with his hands and legs bound at the government nursing college in Kottayam.

In the footage, seniors were seen jabbing him with a compass from a geometry set. While the victim cried out in pain, his attackers were heard laughing. They were also seen pouring lotion into his mouth.

The accused also placed a dumbbell on the victim's genitals. The video shows a cloth clip hanging from each nipple and one of the tormenters is seen tugging at them.

Police are investigating not only the assault but also who filmed the video and how it was made public.

Police said they are now probing if there were more victims who faced similar torture.  Five accused students were arrested on the day the complaint was filed.
