The She Shakti Suraksha Survey conducted by CNN-News18 and P-Value measured Indian women's safety perceptions in various settings. The survey findings were released on March 7.
A majority of women (82%) report feeling safe in their neighbourhoods while only 4% say they feel unsafe, revealed the CNN-News18’s survey. The remaining 14% likely had neutral feelings.

The survey revealed a concerning finding regarding women-friendly infrastructure that includes women's restrooms, security personnel, CCTV monitoring and adequate lighting. Total 56% women who participated in the survey were OK with infrastructure, while 22% considered them inadequate. The remaining 22% likely had neutral opinions on the infrastructure.

The survey also assessed perceptions about ongoing safety initiatives. While 67% of women believe sufficient efforts are being made to ensure their safety, 19% disagree, suggesting some gap between safety measures and women’s actual needs.

Perhaps most revealing is the stark difference in safety perceptions between day and night. While daytime safety ratings are generally positive, night-time safety perceptions drop dramatically, with only 54% of women feeling safe walking alone in their neighbourhoods after dark. A concerning 15% explicitly reported feeling unsafe during night-time hours.
She Shakti Suraksha Survey
This comprehensive assessment surveyed 1,938 women across 20 Indian cities using Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI). The research, conducted in 10 different Indian languages, employed random sampling of 400 respondents per city to ensure representative results.
The She Shakti Suraksha Survey ultimately aims to create a safer, more inclusive India where women can fully exercise their citizenship rights without safety concerns limiting their education, mobility, economic participation, or overall quality of life.
By analysing responses across demographic variables including age, education level, marital status, and household monthly income, the survey provides an intersectional understanding of safety perceptions, recognizing that women’s experiences vary significantly based on their social, economic, and personal contexts.
