Work on the remaining 76-km stretch of the 701-km-long Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway, a key project initiated by Devendra Fadnavis, is now fully complete.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will open it for vehicular traffic by mid-March. Currently, motorists can access the expressway from Igatpuri near Nashik till Nagpur, a drive of 625 km.
The MSRDC, which involved 16 construction firms in the project, confirmed that the construction of the final stretch is complete, with only the connecting road to the expressway, being built on behalf of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), still under progress, according to the Free Press Journal. The pending work is expected to be completed by March 10.
Announced in November 2015, the expressway was constructed in 16 phases.
How Samruddhi Expressway will help commuters?
The expressway will reduce the travel time from Mumbai to Nagpur from 16 hours to eight hours. The project provides connectivity between JNPT in Mumbai and Nagpur-Multimodal International airport.
Is the Samruddhi Expressway project delayed?
The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway was partially opened in December 2022 and March 2023. According to MSRDC, there were plans to partially open the final leg of the project, the 76-km stretch between Igatpuri and Amane, in November-December 2024, but it could not be done due to delay in formation of the new state government. The officials then decided to complete all pending construction work and throw open the stretch in one go.
The construction of road on this stretch is complete and only the additional works like tree plantation and installation of crash barriers are pending that will be completed by mid-March.
When was Samruddhi Expressway project inaugurated?
Prime minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 520km of the expressway, between Nagpur and Shirdi, on December 11, 2022. On May 23, 2023, then chief minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the 105-km stretch from Shirdi to Bharvir. Another 25 km between Bharvir and Igatpuri was thrown open to motorists on March 4, 2024 without any inaugural event.
