Muslim woman shows rakhi she will tie to PM Modi on Raksha Bandhan

August 06, 2025 / 16:52 IST

A muslim woman named Qamar Mohsin Shaikh on Wednesday showed the rakhi she will tie to PM Modi on Raksha Bandhan, which will be celebrated on Saturday this week.

Qamar was born in Pakistan's Karachi and has been living in Ahmedabad since her marriage. She has been tying rakhis to PM Modi since before he became the chief minister of Gujarat in 2001.

Qamar Mohsin Shaikh said that when she first tied rakhi to PM Modi, she told him that she prayed that he become the Chief Minister of Gujarat and later to become the Prime Minister.

"My husband is a painter. We used to go to Delhi for his exhibitions... When we met PM Modi for the first time, he said, 'How are you, sister?'... When I tied a rakhi to him for the first time, I told him that I prayed he would become the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He said, laughing, 'I am happy with my work at the Sangh. Why do you curse me?," she said.

"When I went to tie a rakhi to him after he became the CM, he said, 'Your wish came true' Then he asked me what I would wish now, so I said, 'I pray that you become the Prime Minister of the country' After that, when I tied a rakhi to him after he became the PM, I told him that I prayed he would rule the whole world. Now India has made a name for itself in the world, and it has happened due to his hard work. Now I pray that all his problems go away," she added.

Although she was unable to visit PM Modi during the COVID-19 pandemic years, Sheikh resumed her visits to Delhi last year and is excited to continue this year.

Her tradition with PM Modi began when she first met him as a worker in the RSS, and was formalised in 1990 through an introduction by Dr. Swaroop Singh, the then Governor of Gujarat.

Singh referred to Sheikh as his daughter, to which Modi responded that she would be his sister.
