The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has scaled down the weather warning for the Mumbai Metropolitan Area on Saturday. The alert for Mumbai was toned down from Orange to yellow.
Mumbai, Palghar and Thane can now expect light to moderate rainfall with scattered thunderstorms and gusty winds instead of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Even for Raigad, the alert was changed from orange to yellow.
The official date for the onset of Mumbai's monsoon period is June 11, Times Of India said.
Meteorologists have downgraded the weather alert as the weather system is still located too far south to cause any major impact on Mumbai, resulting in lower-than-expected rainfall on Thursday, despite an earlier orange alert. As of 8:30 AM on Friday, a well-marked low-pressure area was still present over the east-central Arabian Sea near the south Konkan coast, and it may strengthen into a depression within the next 24 hours, according to experts.
On Friday, no rain was recorded in Mumbai’s suburbs, and southern parts of the city received only 6.1mm of rain. Humidity levels, however, remained extremely high due to current weather conditions. The Colaba observatory reported 94% humidity, while Santacruz recorded 88%.
Between March 1 and May 23, the Colaba observatory logged 124mm of rain, and Santacruz measured 137.3mm — both significantly above the norm by 115mm and 126mm, respectively.
Meanwhile, in addition to Mumbai, IMD has also made predictions for Goa. The weather department has predicted widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds blowing at speeds of 40-50 kmph for the small coastal state.
