The Monsoon Session of Parliament 2025 has been marked by significant ruckus and disruptions from the Opposition over the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor and Union Minister Amit Shah's introduction of bills proposing the removal of elected representatives (including the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers) detained on serious criminal charges was met with strong opposition.

The only structured discussion that took place during the entire session was on Operation Sindoor, while several other important debates, including a special discussion proposed by the government on India’s space programme for Viksit Bharat 2047, were stalled due to ruckus in both Houses.

Parliament on Wednesday passed the IIM (Amendment) Bill-2025, paving the way for the establishment of Assam’s first IIM in Guwahati and second in the North-East after IIM-Shillong.

Parliamentary observers noted that the session highlighted the deepening standoff between the Treasury and Opposition benches. Important legislations with far-reaching consequences—from taxation and sports governance to higher education and shipping reforms—were passed with little scrutiny.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced bills, including one to ensure the removal of elected representatives arrested or detained on serious criminal charges from office. The proposed law will cover the Prime Minister, Union ministers, Chief Ministers and ministers of Union Territories.
