Anant Kumar Singh, the controversial Janata Dal (United) strongman, has clinched a commanding victory from the Mokama Assembly constituency, sealing his return to the Bihar legislature despite being behind bars.
Singh secured 91,416 votes after 26 rounds of counting, defeating RJD’s Veena Devi, who finished with 63,023 votes, as per the Election Commission of India. His win reaffirms his enduring influence in Mokama, a seat he has dominated for years.
His victory is striking given the legal cloud over him. Singh was arrested earlier this year in connection with the murder of a Jan Suraaj supporter, yet his core vote base has shown unwavering loyalty. Mokama, which went to polls in the first phase, recorded a turnout of 64.77 percent.

Who is Anant Singh?
Known locally as ‘Chhote Sarkar,’ Anant Kumar Singh is one of Bihar’s most recognisable political figures. A five-time MLA from Mokama, he currently faces 28 criminal cases, according to his affidavit.
After being disqualified in 2022 following a UAPA conviction, Singh ceded the seat to his wife. Now, recently acquitted by the Patna High Court, he has taken back the political mantle, contesting the 2025 polls himself.
His affidavit lists movable assets worth Rs 26.66 crore and immovable assets worth Rs 11.22 crore. His wife, Neelam Devi, also declared significant wealth, including Rs 13.07 crore in movable assets and Rs 49.65 crore in immovable property.
Singh declared Rs 15.61 lakh in cash, while his wife reported Rs 34.60 lakh. Their combined assets include multiple bank accounts, gold jewellery, three luxury SUVs worth Rs 3.23 crore owned by Singh, and additional luxury cars worth Rs 77.62 lakh owned by Neelam. The affidavit also lists horses, cows, and other livestock under their assets.
