In a significant move to strengthen national security and curb infiltration, following a surge in cross-border tensions that escalated into one of the most deadly confrontations in recent decades, the Narendra Modi government has ramped up a slew of key infrastructure projects along the India-Pakistan border.

As per a News18 report, the Centre has cleared key development projects worth over Rs 1,500 crore focused on high-risk border zones. These include substantial upgrades to fencing, road connectivity, surveillance, and essential utilities in vulnerable stretches of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

Under this, more than 500 km of existing border fencing will be replaced with modular, multi-layered, high-strength barriers designed to better withstand infiltration attempts, states the report.

In addition, the High-Level Empowered Committee (HLEC) has cleared focused interventions in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba, Indereshwar Nagar, and Kathua districts, as well as Punjab’s Ferozepur and Abohar regions, it has been learnt from the report. These include linking Border Outposts (BOPs) to the fencing line through new roads, enabling quicker and safer troop movements.

Also, to enhance frontline defence, bulletproof sentry posts will be installed for Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, especially in areas vulnerable to unprovoked firing from across the border.

Furthermore, Rs 160 crore has been allocated for setting up sustainable water storage and distribution systems, recognising the persistent water shortages faced by troops. These will replace the current, inefficient tanker-based supply model reliant on rough, unpaved routes.

With improved surveillance, logistics, and protection infrastructure, the government aims to seal gaps in border defence and respond more effectively to evolving infiltration tactics and cross-border aggression.
