Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of Hindus’ safety in Bangladesh in his meeting with interim government’s chief advisor Md Yunus in Bangkok on sidelines of BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok on Friday. In a press briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that PM Modi expressed “deep concerns,” on the situation of Hindus in Bangladesh.
In the meeting with Yunus, Modi underlined New Delhi’s desire to forge positive, constructive relationship with Dhaka, Misri added. Misri further added that during the meeting, PM Modi reiterated India's support for a democratic, peaceful, stable and inclusive Bangladesh.
This was the first time that PM Modi met the Bangladesh Chief Advisor since ousted PM Sheikh Hasina fled the country and took refuge in New Delhi following the nationwide protests.
Amid the controversy around Yunus' recent remarks on India's NorthEast region in China, PM Modi "urged that any rhetoric that vitiates the environment is best avoided," Foreign Secretary further said.
The Prime Minister highlighted the law enforcement on Indo-Bangla border as well. "On the border, strict enforcement of the law and prevention of illegal border crossing are necessary to maintain border security and security," the MEA officials said.
PM Modi is in Bangkok on a two-day trip to attend the BIMSTEC Summit's sixth edition. He will be meeting his Nepali counterpart KP Sharma Oli later in evening, the foreign secretary added.
