The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday responded to the killing of three Bangladeshi nationals in clashes with Indian villagers after the men crossed the border illegally, News18 reported.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, while responding to questions, said that India is fully committed to maintaining peace along the border.
Jaiswal further emphasised that Bangladesh should lend support for building fences along critical stretches of the border to curb smuggling and other cross-border crimes.
The deadly confrontation unfolded on Wednesday in Bidyabil village, Khowai district, when three Bangladeshi nationals were killed by an angry mob after they reportedly tried to steal cattle.
The MEA stated that the men attacked villagers with iron dahs and knives, resulting in the death of one local. Authorities who arrived at the scene found two of the suspected intruders dead, while the third later died in hospital. The ministry confirmed that all three bodies have been handed over to Bangladesh and a police case has been registered.
According to local accounts, the incident began when two villagers working at a nearby rubber farm spotted the men moving cattle toward the border. When the villagers confronted them, men reportedly attacked, which allegedly instigated other residents to assemble and respond to them. The clash escalated quickly, eventually leaving all three alleged intruders dead.
Dhaka condemned the killings, describing them as a “heinous act" and a “grave violation of human rights and the rule of law". The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “The Government of Bangladesh strongly protests and condemns the brutal beating and killing of three Bangladeshi citizens by a mob in Tripura, India, on 15 October 2025."
“This heinous act is an unacceptable and grave violation of human rights and the rule of law. The Government of Bangladesh expresses its serious concern over this deplorable incident and calls upon the Government of India to conduct an immediate, impartial and transparent investigation into the incident and take sincere efforts to stop the recurrence of such inhumane acts," the statement added.
The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry has urged India to hold an “immediate, impartial and transparent investigation into the incident and take sincere efforts to stop the recurrence of such inhumane acts". “The perpetrators must be identified and brought to justice," the ministry added.
