A long ongoing dispute over ancestral property turned tragic in Jabalpur on Friday when a man brutally stabbed his elder brother and sister-in-law to death in front of their children.
Officials said that the accused, named Bablu Chaudhary, is a daily wage labourer and had been arguing with his brother Sanjay Chaudhary for months over the apparent division of their family property.
On the day of the incident, Bablu went to Sanjay's home around noon and demanded that he be given his share. This led to a heated confrontation and the situation soon spiralled out of control, following which, Bablu committed the crime.
Police said Bablu pulled out a knife during the quarrel and repeatedly stabbed Sanjay. CCTV footage from the neighbourhood shows the horrifying sequence --- Sanjay stumbling out of his home, with Bablu following him and continuing the assault even after he fell to the ground.
NDTV reported that the footage captures Bablu stabbing his brother multiple times, first in the front and then in the back, as Sanjay’s wife and another man try in vain to restrain him. Sanjay briefly manages to get up and walk away, but Bablu chases him and attacks again.
Moments later, Bablu allegedly ran after his sister-in-law, who had rushed back inside the house, and stabbed her to death in front of her two children before fleeing the scene.
Both victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
“This was a cold-blooded act stemming from a long-standing property dispute,” said police station in-charge Pratiksha Marco. “The accused will be arrested soon.”
Police have filed a case of murder against Bablu and launched a manhunt. Search teams have been deployed across nearby districts to trace his whereabouts.
