Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Independence Day celebrations on July 26 as the Chief Guest, according to News18.

The move is seen as an attempt to mend the strained ties between two neighbors, which started with Muizzu's "India Out" campaign during the last presidential elections. He called for the withdrawal of Indian defence personnel and reducing India’s influence.

Later, Muizzu visited India in last year in October and both countries agreed to transform the bilateral relationship into a ‘Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership’.

Additionally, New Delhi decided to extend support in the form of Rs 30 billion and $400 million as part of a bilateral currency swap agreement, to help Maldives in the ongoing financial challenges.

Muizzu had also attended PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremony for his third term on June 9 last year.
