Maharashtra CM News November 26 Highlights: No clarity yet on who will get the top post

November 26, 2024· 22:59 IST

Maharashtra CM News Latest Updates Today (November 26): Shiv Sena supremo Eknath Shinde tendered his resignation as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday, the last day of the current Assembly, with no word yet on his successor yet. Shinde, who has been asked to continue as the caretaker CM, arrived at the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai today morning and submitted his letter of resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan. He was accompanied by deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. The development comes three days after the Mahayuti clinched a record-breaking majority, winning 230 of the 288 Assembly seats in the state. As the suspense over the next chief minister continues, the BJP is learnt to have cleared Fadnavis' candidature for the post and is in the process of pacifying the Shiv Sena to give up on its claim. Giving up on the claim to the chief minister's post may see the Shiv Sena bag some key portfolios, including ones that the BJP wished to keep for itself. As per some media reports, the Mahayuti is expected to follow the same formation of a chief minister and two deputy chief ministers to head the government. Meanwhile, the BJP has called a meeting of top leaders of the Mahayuti, including Shinde, Pawar and Fadnavis, and a decision on the leadership question is likely to be announced in the coming few days.

Maharashtra CM News Live: What happens if Mahayuti fails to come to a consensus on CM face by November 26?

  • Failure on part of Mahayuti constituents to come to a consensus on its chief ministerial pick by November 26, the day the term of the current Assembly expires, would automatically lead to the imposition of President's rule in Maharashtra, constitutional expert and former Secretary General of the Lok Sabha PDT Achary tells Moneycontrol.
  • "Since the term of the current Assembly is concluding on November 26, there is no legal provision for the present government to continue beyond the date. Now that a new Assembly has been elected in Maharashtra, the Chief Minister has to be sworn-in before the conclusion of the term of the current Assembly. In the event this does not happen, President's rule will be imposed in the state. Since the CM is the head of the council of ministers, his swearing-in will be sufficient to assume that the new government is in place," he said.
