Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has jumped on the latest internet trend—AI-generated Ghibli-style images—by sharing a dreamy illustration of his family with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The viral phenomenon, which has taken social media by storm, began after OpenAI’s latest model, GPT-4o, showcased its ability to transform ordinary photos into the whimsical, painterly aesthetic of Japan’s renowned Studio Ghibli.

The trend has swept across social media platforms, drawing in celebrities, business leaders, and even major brands. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar shared a Ghibli-style recreation of India’s iconic 2011 ICC World Cup victory, captioning it, “What if Ghibli made cricket?” Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma also updated his profile picture, embracing the AI-generated artistry.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was among the first to acknowledge the trend, changing his profile picture on X (formerly Twitter) to a Ghibli-style version of himself. “Changed my pfp but maybe someone will make me a better one,” he posted. The AI-generated artwork became so widespread that he later joked about waking up to “hundreds of messages” featuring him in the signature Ghibli look.
>be me>grind for a decade trying to help make superintelligence to cure cancer or whatever>mostly no one cares for first 7.5 years, then for 2.5 years everyone hates you for everything>wake up one day to hundreds of messages: "look i made you into a twink ghibli style haha" Sam Altman (@sama) March 26, 2025
Beyond individuals, major brands have also joined the wave. Companies like Airbus and India Post have experimented with the trend, showcasing AI-powered artwork on their social media handles.

Studio Ghibli, which has been producing acclaimed animated films for 40 years, has long had a dedicated global fanbase. But thanks to OpenAI’s latest innovation, its signature aesthetic has now reached an even wider audience, making its mark on internet culture in a whole new way.
