The Maha Kumbh Mela, also known as the Great Pitcher Festival, is set to begin in Prayagraj on January 13, with over 400 million people expected to participate over the course of six weeks. This makes it the largest human gathering in the world, a spiritual and cultural event that draws devotees from across India and around the globe.
What is the Maha Kumbh Mela?
Held every three years in four cities on the banks of sacred rivers across India, the Kumbh Mela is a revered Hindu festival. The event that occurs once every 12 years is called the "Maha Kumbh" (great), as it is considered more auspicious due to its timing. The Maha Kumbh Mela attracts the largest number of devotees and is believed to offer spiritual benefits such as absolution of sins and salvation from the cycle of life and death.
A Sacred Ritual Rooted in Ancient Mythology
The origins of the Kumbh Mela can be traced back to the Hindu text Rigveda. The word kumbh refers to a pitcher containing the elixir of immortality, which emerged during the divine churning of the cosmic ocean, known as Sagar Manthan. According to the myth, the nectar fell at four locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain, which became the sites for the Kumbh Mela.
During the Mela, devotees from various Hindu sects, or Akharas, participate in grand processions and take part in the 'Shahi Snaan' or royal bath, dipping in the sacred rivers to purify themselves. This event also draws millions who come not only to take part in rituals but to witness the presence of saints, ascetics, and hermits, often seen in their saffron robes, braving near-freezing river temperatures.
Global and Local Participation
The Kumbh Mela is not just an Indian phenomenon. Celebrities and global leaders have attended in the past, including actor Richard Gere, filmmaker David Lynch, and Tibetan Buddhist leader Dalai Lama. In 2017, the Kumbh Mela was included in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, solidifying its global significance.
Prayagraj city, located at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, is gearing up for this massive gathering, with officials expecting millions of pilgrims, saints, and devotees to flock to the site. In addition to the religious attendees, tourists and international visitors have also shown interest in the event.
Organising the Maha Kumbh Mela: A Mammoth Task
Organising the Maha Kumbh Mela is a monumental challenge. To accommodate the influx of devotees, authorities have set up 150,000 temporary tents, and the event is expected to draw three times the population of Russia, according to Reuters.
To ensure smooth operations, more than 450,000 new electricity connections are being installed, and authorities have allocated approximately Rs 64 billion ($765 million) to support the event’s infrastructure. The Mela is projected to consume power equivalent to what 100,000 urban apartments typically use in a month.
Indian Railways has introduced 98 special trains, making 3,300 trips to transport visitors, in addition to regular train services. To secure the safety of the massive crowd, the Uttar Pradesh police have deployed 40,000 personnel, including cybercrime experts, supported by a web of surveillance powered by artificial intelligence.
Focus on Safety and Security
The safety and well-being of the pilgrims are a priority for the state authorities. Emergency services have been ramped up, with 125 road ambulances, seven river ambulances, and air ambulances for swift medical response. Drones and surveillance cameras are being deployed across the Mela grounds to monitor the situation and prevent stampedes, which have been a concern in previous events.
Prashant Kumar, the police chief of Uttar Pradesh, reassured the public, saying, “Security and safety of pilgrims is our priority.”
The Maha Kumbh Mela is more than just a religious event. It is a cultural experience that attracts people from all walks of life, spanning generations and countries. The gathering of millions is a testament to India's rich religious history, diverse spiritual practices, and the devotion of its people.
