Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has termed the Ahmedabad plane crash "very tragic accident," confirming significant loss of lives, including foreign nationals.
A London-bound Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner with 242 on board crashed into residential quarters of BJ Medical College doctors in the Ahmedabad's Meghaninagar area, minutes after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday (June 12). The flight, AI171, went down in a densely populated residential area shortly after issuing a Mayday call.
“We have lost a lot of people. Very tragic accident, extend our deepest condolences to people who lost loved ones,” Jaiswal said in a statement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as "heartbreaking beyond words".
"The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected," the Prime Minister said in a statement.
The Civil Aviation Ministry has been monitoring the situation closely. Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu issued a statement soon after the incident: "Shocked and devastated to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. We are on highest alert. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action. Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site. My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families."
