Centre's truce offer to Opposition amid SIR storm: Lok Sabha to debate 'electoral reforms' on December 9

The Opposition on Sunday (November 30, 2025) demanded that a discussion be held in Parliament over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and indicated that functioning of both the Houses would be hampered if such a debate is not allowed.

The ensuing parliamentary logjam between the government and the opposition over several issues, primarily over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls  appears to have ended, with the treasury bench agreeing to hold a debate on SIR under the topic of electoral reforms on December 9.

Going by the preliminary comments from govt sources, the treasury bench will strongly defend the exercise in Parliament citing its success in Bihar. The government is also expected to partake in a discussion on Vande Mataram the previous day, November 8.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed the schedule in a post on X. “During the All Party Meeting Chaired by Hon’ble Speaker Lok Sabha today, it has been decided to hold discussion in Lok Sabha on 150th Anniversary of National Song ‘Vande Mataram’ from 12 Noon on Monday 8th Dec and discussion on Election Reforms from 12 noon on Tuesday 9th Dec," he wrote.

The Opposition on Sunday (November 30, 2025) demanded that a discussion be held in Parliament over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and indicated that functioning of both the Houses would be hampered if such a debate is not allowed.

During an all-party meeting convened by the government a day before the Winter session of Parliament, the Opposition parties also strongly pressed for a discussion on national security in the wake of the Delhi blast incident. They also alleged that the government wants to "finish off" democracy and "bury" parliamentary traditions.

This year's winter session is one of the shortest- from December 1 to December 19. The core issues this time include discussions on SIR, the blast near Delhi's Red Fort, and the air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region.

The government is planning to introduce 13 legislative bills and one financial bill during this session. Before the session began, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Monday. Prime Minister Modi said that the session must not become a stage for political theatrics but a platform for constructive and result-driven debate.
