The brutal rape and murder of a woman doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024, had sent shockwaves across the nation, triggering widespread protests and calls for justice. The victim, referred to as ‘Abhaya’, was attacked while on duty, sparking a movement among medical professionals and citizens alike. The protests, which included hunger strikes by junior doctors, have seen widespread support across the country, with people from all walks of life demanding stronger security for doctors and a fair trial for the perpetrators.
As the Sealdah court prepares to deliver its verdict this afternoon, all eyes are on the justice system, with medical professionals and the victim’s family questioning the role of hospital authorities, police, and state officials in the incident.
Aniketh Mahato, a doctor who was hospitalised after going on a hunger strike, stated that the judgment must answer key questions, as per a News18 report. “We need to know if only one person was involved in the crime. If Sanjay Roy is the sole perpetrator, what was his motive? And why did the authorities attempt to cover up the case?” Mahato has been cited in the report. He expressed doubts that Roy could have committed such a brutal act alone, pointing out that the victim suffered multiple injuries. "We won't be satisfied if only Roy is convicted; we believe others may have been involved," Mahato added, hinting at a larger conspiracy, in the report.
Dr. Aquib, another prominent figure in the protests, while speaking to News18, echoed the sentiment, stating, “All eyes will be on the Sealdah court, hoping that justice will be served in its truest sense.”
Rimjhim Mitra, a researcher who organised the ‘Reclaim the Night’ march, expressed hopes for a verdict that would hold the system accountable. Mitra stated, “We are waiting for answers as to why the incident was initially misreported as a suicide and why there were lapses in communication. While I don't believe in capital punishment, I expect an exemplary sentence to prevent future crimes of this nature," as per the News18 report.
The family of the 31-year-old victim, who had been working as a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar, has expressed deep anguish over the incident. The victim's parents, devastated by the loss of their daughter, are seeking the death penalty for the main accused, Sanjay Roy. “We hope Roy gets the capital punishment, but we do not believe he acted alone. There are many unanswered questions. We believe the chest department may have been involved, but the CBI has not properly interrogated them,” the victim’s parents shared, as per a PTI report.
They also raised concerns about the initial mishandling of the case, claiming that the authorities tried to cover it up. The family had hoped for a more thorough investigation but felt let down by both the Kolkata Police and the CBI. “The CBI hasn’t done enough,” they added.
With the verdict approaching, the family and protesting doctors are determined to keep the pressure on the courts and authorities. “We will continue to fight for justice, so that no woman faces the same fate as Abhaya,” the victim's mother stated.
As the nation watches the court’s decision, the case has highlighted the dire need for stronger protection for medical professionals and a more accountable investigation process. The case has also brought attention to the vulnerabilities faced by doctors in their workplaces, sparking a nationwide conversation on safety and justice.
The Sealdah court's ruling will be significant in answering the questions surrounding the case. With the CBI pushing for the death penalty for Roy, and the victim's family demanding justice, the outcome will have far-reaching implications not only for the individuals involved but for the future of women’s safety in hospitals across India.
