A 20-year-old woman was gang-raped by 2 men she knew in Kolkata on Sunday, police have confirmed, as per a report by NDTV. The incident took place in the Regent Park area which happens to fall in the outskirts of the city.
The accused have been identified as Deep and Chandan Malik. NDTV has reported that Deep is a government employee.
The woman is from Haridevpur and told the police that the two men raped her after Chandan took her to Deep's house, after telling her that they would celebrate her birthday there.
"The woman's birthday was on Friday. On that occasion, the accused Chandan and Deep took the victim to the latter's flat. There, they had a meal. She said when she wanted to return home, the accused stopped her. They allegedly locked the door and gang-raped her," one of the police sources told NDTV.
The police said that the woman managed to escape at around 10:30 am and that she informed her family after reaching home. Following this, the family registered a First Information Report (FIR) on Saturday. Police have started looking for the two men.
The woman, in her complaint, said that she first met Chandan a few months ago and he had introduced himself as the head of a large Durga Puja committee in south Kolkata. Then, through him, she was introduced to Deep, following which, the three kept in touch and the two men promised to have her involved in the puja committee.
