Five senior nursing students at the Government Nursing College in Kerala’s Kottayam have been arrested for allegedly harassing first-year students. A case was registered by the police after three junior students at the college submitted a complaint stating that the ragging had been going for almost three months since November last year.

The victims claimed they were forced to stand naked and subjected to brutal treatment involving weightlifting dumbbells, news agency PTI reported. Additionally, they alleged that injuries were inflicted using compasses and similar objects, after which lotion was applied to their wounds.

Following their complaint, the students were suspended and arrested under the Anti-Ragging Act. An NDTV report citing police revealed that the junior students were forced to stand naked while their seniors hung dumbbells from their private parts.

The report further revealed that the seniors allegedly documented the abuse on video and coerced the juniors into silence by threatening them with severe repercussions, including academic setbacks.

According to the complaint, senior students regularly forced juniors to give them money on Sundays to buy alcohol and often assaulted them.

After enduring prolonged harassment, three students decided to report the abuse to the Kottayam Gandhinagar police.

The arrested students were identified as Rahul Raj, NS Jeeva, NP Vivek, Rigil Jeeth and Samuel Johnson.

A case against the arrested students was registered under Sections 118(1),308(2),351(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and under Sections 3 and 4 of The Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act.
