In a shocking incident, a 23-year-old man walked into a police station in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram and admitted that he has killed six people, including his family members. However, the police have confirmed the deaths of five people.
The deceased include the accused's 13-year-old brother Ahasan, grandmother Salma Beevi, paternal uncle Lateef, aunt Shahiha and his girlfriend Farshana. The murder took place at three different places over a duration of a few hours on Monday evening.
The heinous crime came to light after the accused, Affan, reached the Venjaramoodu police station and surrendered himself. He also told the police that he had consumed poison. Following his confession, he was taken to the Medical College Hospital for treatment.
According to police, Affan asserted that he killed six family members as they refused to clear off the huge debts he had incurred after suffering losses in his business in a Gulf country.
The police have doubts over his version and are digging deeper to find more details in the case. The mobile phone and call details of the accused are being checked to ascertain if he is addicted to drugs.
A case has been registered under the relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Affan. KS Sudarsan, Thiruvananthapuram rural SP, said five deaths have been confirmed and one is critically injured. The accused's mother is critical and is undergoing treatment at the Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. Three cases have been registered at two police stations, he said.
"The motive can be ascertained only after recording his statement in detail. There are indications about financial issues, and gold was reportedly missing. Such aspects have to be verified. A hammer has been recovered from the crime site," The Indian Express quoted Sudarshan as saying.
Thiruvananthapuram district panchayat member Binu S. Nair said the bodies found at the suspect's house had sustained heavy wounds on their heads. While the provocation for the murders is yet to be ascertained, a local, Shaji, said Affan's friend Farsana was at the house for the last two days. It seems there were problems in the family over it, he said. According to Shaji, the accused did not have any known history of criminal activities or drug abuse.
