A day after Nitish Kumar secured a victory in the Rajya Sabha polls, senior party leader KC Tyagi on Tuesday quit the Janata Dal United JD(U). Tyagi, reportedly will reveal his new political destination at a meeting being convened on March 22 in New Delhi.

Multiple media reports citing sources said Tyagi now wishes to become active in Uttar Pradesh politics; in the coming days, Tyagi will join a new political party.

In 1989, he was elected as a Member of Parliament to the Lok Sabha from the Hapur constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Over the years, he has held key organisational roles across parties, including serving as National General Secretary of the Samajwadi Party and later as National Spokesperson of the Janata Dal United.

Tyagi was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2013 and went on to serve as the JDU's National General Secretary on three separate occasions. In 2024, he stepped down as the party's National Chief Spokesperson, citing personal reasons.

Despite his long-standing association with the JD(U), the exact reasons behind his decision to quit the party now remain unclear, adding to the political speculation surrounding his move.

The election for the post of JD(U) national president will be held this month. Ever since this announcement, speculation has been rife regarding who will secure the party's top organizational post this time, as Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has now been elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Bihar's longest-serving CM was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar as the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) swept the polls, winning all five seats. Kumar secured 44 first-preference votes in the election held on Monday.
