Security has been heightened at Vijay’s residence in Chennai and for TVK district secretaries, amid fears that public anger could turn towards the party leadership, NDTV reported citing sources in the state government.
TVK leaders, including general secretary N Anand, joint general secretary Nirmal Kumar, and Karur West district secretary VP Mathiyazhagan, face charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
However, TVK has claimed there is evidence of a criminal conspiracy behind the stampede and is set to move the High Court seeking an independent probe.
Saturday’s rally at Veluswamypuram, Karur, drew nearly 27,000 people, but turned deadly after a surge in the crowd when Vijay arrived seven hours late. Police confirmed only 500 personnel had been deployed despite the unexpectedly massive turnout. Tamil Nadu DGP G Venkataraman admitted security arrangements fell short.
Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered a judicial probe led by retired Justice Aruna Jagadeesan and announced relief measures for victims’ families.
The DMK-led state government has strongly criticised TVK for alleged violations of safety norms, including poor arrangements for water and food. Government sources said people fainted in the heat, and ambulances were blocked while Vijay continued addressing the crowd. The actor later left for Chennai via Trichy airport.
Meanwhile, Vijay in a post on X, said extended condolences and prayed for speedy recovery to those who are injured.
"My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital," he posted.
Additonally, a victim named Senthilkannan, who suffered injuries in the incident, argued that the tragedy was “not a mere accident but the direct result of reckless planning, gross mismanagement, and complete disregard for public safety.”
He urged the Madras High court to restrain Tamil Nadu police from granting permission for TVK rallies, saying the Right to Life under Article 21 must override the Right to Assembly when safety is at risk.
