The Kartavya Path in Delhi will transform into a river of light this Diwali, with two lakh earthen lamps set to illuminate the iconic stretch on October 18 and 19. The celebration, led by the BJP government in Delhi, will feature a Ramayana-themed laser and drone show, marking the city’s grandest festival event since the new government took charge.
According to officials cited by PTI, the two-day celebration is designed to mirror Ayodhya’s Deepotsav, which over the past eight years has become a globally recognised spectacle, setting records for lighting lakhs of diyas along the banks of the Saryu River.
A Ramayana-inspired spectacle in the capital
“The Kartavya Path will be lit up with two lakh diyas on October 18 and as many on the next day. A laser and drone show on the theme of Ramayana will be held to mark the occasion,” an official told PTI.
The event is expected to draw large crowds and will be attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, her cabinet ministers, MLAs, and BJP MPs. Officials said the festival will serve as a symbolic celebration of Delhi’s new era under BJP rule.
“This is the first major festival since the BJP came to power. The true spirit of the celebration lies in illuminating every corner. Kartavya Path will shine in all its glory, lit brightly by the glow of diyas,” the official added.
First Diwali under new BJP government
The BJP returned to power in Delhi in February after a gap of more than 26 years, defeating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with a two-thirds majority. The Deepotsav-style celebration is being viewed as both a symbol of cultural pride and a statement of political confidence for the newly formed government.
Officials say the event aims to connect the capital’s festivities with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of celebrating India’s traditions with grandeur, similar to the massive celebrations in Ayodhya.
City-wide preparations for a clean and radiant Diwali
Ahead of the celebrations, the Delhi government has issued special orders to all departments to ensure the capital remains clean, safe, and radiant during Diwali.
Delhi Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma has directed all local bodies, the Electricity Department, and the Public Works Department (PWD) to ensure that streetlights are functional across major roads, markets, religious sites, and public spaces.
Detailed instructions have also been issued to municipal authorities to maintain clean streets, smooth traffic flow, and an overall festive atmosphere across the city.
By bringing Ayodhya’s Deepotsav spirit to Delhi, the BJP hopes to create a cultural showcase that blends devotion and technology, from traditional diyas to a high-tech laser and drone retelling of the Ramayana.
If the scale of preparation is any indication, the Kartavya Path celebration promises to be one of Delhi’s most visually stunning Diwalis yet, a festival that aims to glow not just with light, but with symbolism.
