Police investigations are focusing on potential rivalries involving criminal elements from North Chennai who are currently incarcerated.

K. Thiruvengadam, a prime suspect in the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Tamil Nadu chief K. Armstrong, was fatally shot by police on Sunday as he attempted to assault officers and flee custody, according to PTI reports citing police officials.

Thiruvengadam was among the 11 individuals arrested in connection with the brutal hacking of Armstrong, who was attacked by a group of assailants on July 5. The incident occurred near Perambur in Chennai, where Armstrong, aged 52, was conversing with friends and supporters outside his residence.

The police, who had been interrogating all 11 suspects for five days, took Thiruvengadam to a location near Madhavaram early in the morning to recover weapons allegedly used in Armstrong's murder. During the operation, Thiruvengadam reportedly attempted to attack a Sub-Inspector (SI) and escape, prompting police to open fire. He sustained injuries and was rushed to government Stanley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Thiruvengadam was also implicated in the 2015 murder case of Thennarasu alias Thenna, the BSP's Tiruvallur district president, near Thamaraipakkam Koot Road near Periyapalayam.

Police investigations are focusing on potential rivalries involving criminal elements from North Chennai who are currently incarcerated. A special team, led by Sembium Inspector of Police Chiranjeevi, has been tasked with apprehending the remaining suspects involved in Armstrong's murder.
