CJI Khanna had asked Varma to quit after a three-member panel found credence in the allegations, the newspaper said.

Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna reportedly asked Justice Yashwant Varma, at whose residence cash was allegedly found, to resign. However, Justice Verma refused to step down, a report by Indian Express said on May 9.

CJI Khanna had asked Varma to quit after a three-member panel found credence in the allegations, the newspaper said.

CJI Khanna submitted the panel's report along with his recommendation and the response of the former Delhi HC judge to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the paper said. The report further said that Khanna has recommended the removal of Varma.

The panel, which was formed on March 22 by the CJI, included Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana high court, Justice G S Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh high court and Justice Anu Sivaraman, Judge of Karnataka high court. The panel was asked to probe the allegations of cash being recovered after a fire broke out at Justice Varma's residence.
