After the Japan Airlines flight that was flying from Shanghai to Tokyo suddenly plummeted mid-air and was forced to deploy oxygen masks after dropping nearly 26,000 feet, passengers who were terrified for their lives, wrote out their wills mid-air.
The plane suddenly experienced a mid-air mechanical issue and began dropping rapidly from approximately 36,000 feet to just under 10,500 feet - all within 10 minutes. The incident happened at approximately 6:53 PM local time, media reports said.
Passengers, scared after the descend, were almost certain that the plane would crash as oxygen masks were suddenly deployed amid fears of passengers losing consciousness due to change in pressure.
According to AP, a passenger said, “I heard a muffled boom, and the oxygen mask fell off in a few seconds. The stewardess cried and shouted to put on the oxygen mask, saying the plane had a malfunction."
Some passengers started writing their wills mid-air, fearing the worst, while others sent their PINs and insurance details to their loved ones, reports have said. Some other passengers were woken up from sleep after the oxygen masks dropped due to the pressure drop.
A video showing the terrified passengers clutching onto oxygen masks and putting them on as an air hostess made an announcement has gone viral on social media.
The flight was diverted and landed safely at 8:50 pm. All 191 passengers and crew on board were unharmed.
Passengers described the situation as "life-threatening" on social media, with some writing final messages to loved ones.
“My body is still here, but my soul hasn’t caught up. My legs are still shaking,” one passenger wrote. Another said, “I was on the verge of tears, writing my will and sharing my bank PINs.”
