Several border areas from Jammu and Kashmir to Gujarat, which lit up after Pakistan violated the agreement to end military action within hours of the announcement, were calm on May 11 morning, with no new reports of firing, shelling or drone spotting.
In a surprise move on May 10 evening, US President Donald Trump announced a “ceasefire” between India and Pakistan on a day of intense aerial warfare, marked by drone and missile strikes and counter-strikes.
New Delhi and Islamabad, too, later confirmed the move to pause military conflict but within hours, Pakistan started shelling areas along the LoC in J&K. Pakistani drones were brought down in Srinagar and as far as Kutch in Gujarat.
In Punjab’s Amritsar, which borders Pakistan, a blackout was ordered as a precautionary measure on May 11. Citizens were told to remain indoors and away from windows and balconies. The blackout has since been lifted but Amritsar continues to be on “red alert”, news agency ANI reported.
Visuals of the city’s Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport, shared by ANI, showed that devotees arriving to pay obeisance at Gurdwara Santsar ji, which is inside the airport premises, being turned away due to security reasons.
Poonch, Rajouri, Udhampur, Amritsar and Pathankot are among the several north Indian towns, which have seen intense Pakistan shelling or swarms of drone trying to hit military bases and civilian population.
Early on May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor, hitting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir with drones and missiles. The strikes came two weeks after 26 people were killed by terrorists in Pahalgam on April 22.
Pakistan targeted several civilian areas with drones, most of which were shot down but around 25 people have been killed in shelling in J&K and many more injured. There has been a lot of damage to property, specially homes, along the LoC.
