External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi on March 21, during which the two leaders discussed escalating regional tensions and bilateral cooperation, according to a statement from the Iranian embassy in India.
The talks focused on recent developments amid what Tehran described as continued “military aggression” by the United States and Israel, as well as its implications for regional stability and security. Both sides also reviewed the progress of India-Iran relations and avenues for further cooperation.
Araghchi, outlining Iran’s position, emphasised what he termed Tehran’s “legitimate defence” and called on independent countries to exert pressure on those responsible for initiating the conflict. He stressed the need to prevent further violations of Iran’s sovereignty and national security.
Referring to the evolving situation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi said stability in the region would depend on an end to hostilities. He added that any cessation of conflict must be accompanied by guarantees to prevent a recurrence of such actions.

Jaishankar, for his part, underscored the importance of restoring peace and stability in the region, while reiterating India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties across multiple sectors.
