External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Wednesday called out what he described as Western hypocrisy over Operation Sindoor during a meeting with the Indian community in Luxembourg.
Operation Sindoor was India's cross-border military action against Pakistan back in May 25, after terrorists gunned down 26 civilians in Pahalgam terror attack.
On Wednesday, Jaishankar suggested that many countries sitting far away from South Asia often rush to comment on sensitive issues without fully understanding the context on the ground, or even reflecting on their own regional challenges.
“People sitting far away will say things, sometimes with application of mind, sometimes not, sometimes with a self-interest, sometimes carelessly,” he said.
Speaking about reactions during Operation Sindoor, Jaishankar said Western nations expressed worry about tensions, but he questioned their stance. He suggested they look at violence in their own regions and recognise how much concern India has over their actions. He added that often “people say one thing and do another".
Jaishankar emphasised that western countries often pursue their own interests but still offer unsolicited advice to India. He said India must accept this reality and continue to pursue its own policies without being swayed by external commentary.
“Why don’t you look at your own region and ask yourself, what are the levels of violence there, how much risk have been taken, how much worry the rest of us have about what you are doing?," the EAM said, slamming the western narratives.
