As the world gears up to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, India is marking the occasion with a renewed focus on gender equality, empowerment, and inclusive progress. The Ministry of Women and Child Development has highlighted this year’s theme—“For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” as a call to action for breaking barriers and ensuring equal opportunities for every woman and girl.
This year’s IWD is particularly significant as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a globally recognized blueprint for advancing women's rights. Over the years, the Indian government has introduced several initiatives to transition from women’s development to women-led development, ensuring their active participation in shaping the country’s socio-economic landscape.
On March 3, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged women across India to share their inspiring life stories on the NaMo App Open Forum ahead of Women’s Day. To further amplify their voices, he announced that selected women would take over his social media accounts on March 8, showcasing their journeys of resilience and success.
The government has reiterated its commitment to empowering women through policy reforms and targeted schemes.
Education: Initiatives like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, and Vigyan Jyoti have contributed to rising female enrolment, with women now constituting 42.57 percent of STEM students in India.
Health & Nutrition: Maternal healthcare has improved, with Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) dropping from 130 (2014-16) to 97 (2018-20). The Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat have improved access to clean water and sanitation.
Economic Empowerment: Women now account for 55 percent of Jan Dhan accounts, 69 percent of microloans under the MUDRA scheme, and 84 percent of Stand-Up India beneficiaries. Additionally, 10 crore women are part of Self-Help Groups under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM).
India is witnessing increased female representation in leadership roles. Women now make up 15 percent of the country’s pilots, surpassing the global average of 5 percent. Their entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and combat roles marks a significant step in gender inclusivity.
