'India will do to Bangladesh what it did to Pakistan ...': Nawaz Sharif aide fears Op Sindoor-like action

Pakistani political commentator Najam Sethi has claimed that India may take an Operation Sindoor-style action against Bangladesh over Dhaka's recent provocative statements targeting New Delhi.

Sehti, a close aide of former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif, told a Pakistani news channel that India will not ignore Bangladesh's remarks and could do to Dhaka what it did to Islamabad.

"Bangladesh is threatening India that it will do this or that to its seven sisters. I think India will do something, similar to what it did against India. The type of aggressive policy Narendra Modi follows ... I don't think he will ignore all this. There's a sentiment there that India has to show that it's a great power," Sethi claimed.

The remarks amid growing strain in ties between New Delhiand Dhaka since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, who is currently living in exile in India.

Bangladesh's interim head Muhammad Yunus sparked a controversy last year during his visit to China when he described India's northeastern states (also known as Seven Sisters) as "landlocked", adding that his country is the “only guardian/gateway” to the ocean. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma called the remarks "offensive and strongly condemnable" while MP Nishikant Dubey labeled them "shameful and provocative".

India has routinely condemned such statements, with external affairs minister S Jaishankar taking a dig at Yunus' remarks while saying that cooperation is an integrated outlook, not one subject to "cherry-picking."

Moreover, India has maintained that it wants to keep ties with Bangladesh friendly despite signals of hostilities. "India has never allowed its territory to be used for activities inimical to the interests of the friendly people of Bangladesh," the MEA said in a statement in December after Dhaka accused India of allowing space to Awami League members to promote anti-Bangladesh elements on its soil.
