As India steps up efforts to designate The Resistance Front, an LeT proxy, as a UN-listed terror outfit, renowned foreign affairs expert KP Fabian outlined how India should pursue the case with the UN agency as there may be an attempt by China to scuttle the move.
Emphasising on the importance of sharing evidence about TRF's role in Pahalgam attack, Fabian said it is very important that we provide strong evidence to the UN Security Council. "You know, can’t always share the evidence with the public unless at a later time, when maybe we can come out with a white paper, but not immediately," remarked the security expert.
Elaborating on how Beijing may react to India efforts, Fabian said, "China is a veto-wielding permanent member, even if China is the only one objecting, the Security Council will not be able to take that decision. But let us see what happens. It is not in China’s interest to permit terrorism in Pakistan, but that is China’s choice."
TRF had claimed responsibility for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead. In response, India launched “Operation Sindoor,” targeting terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The Indian technical team met with the Monitoring Team of the UN Security Council's 1267 Sanctions Committee, as well as other partner countries. According to sources, they also held talks with Under-Secretary-General Vladimir Voronkov (UNOCT) and Assistant Secretary-General Natalia Gherman (CTED).
Speaking to ANI, Fabian talked about the possibility of China objecting to declaring TRF as a terrorist group. He said that the UNSC will not be able to declare the TRF a terrorist entity if China objects to it.
In a joint readout provided to PTI, the UN officials expressed condolences over the Pahalgam attack and highlighted ongoing collaboration with India to implement Security Council counter-terrorism resolutions and the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.Post Operation Sindoor, India strongly underscores its 'tech readiness' to face future conflicts
