The Indian Navy is preparing to commission its latest stealth frigate, INS Taragiri (F41), on 3 April. According to a statement, the ceremony, scheduled to be presided over by the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, will serve as a powerful testament to the nation's journey toward becoming a completely self-reliant naval power.
The fourth ship of Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) and the third one built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Ltd (MDL), 'Taragiri' (Yard 12653), was delivered to the Navy on November 28 last year at MDL, Mumbai, marking a major milestone in achieving self-reliance in warship design and construction.
Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, this frigate represents a generational leap over earlier designs, offering a sleeker form and a significantly reduced radar cross-section that allows it to operate with lethal stealth. With indigenous content exceeding 75 per cent, the ship highlights the maturity of a domestic industrial ecosystem that now spans over 200 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), contributing to the GoI's Aatmanirbharta initiatives and supporting thousands of Indian jobs.
Driven by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion plant, Taragiri is designed for 'High-Speed High Endurance' versatility and multi-dimensional maritime operations.
The release stated that the ship's weapon suite is world-class, featuring supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and a specialised anti-submarine warfare suite.
These systems are seamlessly integrated through a state-of-the-art Combat Management System, ensuring that the crew can respond to threats with split-second precision.
Advanced Combat Capabilities
Beyond its role as a premier hunter of the seas, Taragiri is built for the complexities of modern diplomacy and humanitarian crises. Its flexible mission profile makes it ideal for everything from high-intensity combat to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR).
The Indian Navy continues to grow as a combat-ready, cohesive, credible, Aatmanirbhar force, safeguarding the seas for a Viksit, Samriddha Bharat guarded by ships designed by Indians, built by Indians and operated by Indians.
Taragiri stands ready for a promising future as a beacon of rising maritime power and an ironclad guardian of our blue frontiers.
Key Features and Strategic Role
INS Taragiri is the fourth Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) stealth frigate. It was delivered by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited on November 28, 2025. The ship replaces an earlier Leander-class vessel of the same name that served from 1980 to 2013.
With around 75 per cent indigenous content, the vessel reflects India’s push for self-reliance.
The frigate is equipped with a wide range of advanced weapons and systems. It can carry the BrahMos ship-to-ship missile system and is fitted with the MRSAM for air defence.
Its combat suite includes the MFSTAR, a 76 mm Super Rapid Gun, and a combination of 30 mm and 12.7 mm close-in weapon systems. For underwater threats, it has anti-submarine rockets and torpedoes.
Designed as a multi-mission platform, the ship is built for both present and future challenges in a contested maritime environment. Its stealth design, automation, and survivability features mark a major upgrade over earlier Project 17 (Shivalik) class frigates.
The vessel uses a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, with a diesel engine and gas turbine driving controllable pitch propellers. It also features an Integrated Platform Management System to manage operations.
The ship’s construction was completed in 81 months, reflecting improved efficiency. Amid tensions in regions such as the Strait of Hormuz, INS Taragiri is expected to strengthen India’s maritime strike capability and territorial defence.
The new vessel carries forward the legacy of the earlier INS Taragiri, a Leander-class frigate that served for 33 years before being decommissioned in 2013. It is seen as a modern reincarnation of that ship, combining tradition with advanced technology.
