The government on Wednesday refuted claims that Pakistan shot down an Indian fighter jet following India's strikes in the neighbouring country in retaliation to the Pahalgam attack.
"An old image showing a crashed aircraft is being re-circulated by pro-Pakistan handles in various forms in the current context of #OperationSindoor," Press Information Bureau's (PIB) Fact Check handle said on X.
It added that the image is from an earlier incident involving an Indian Air Force (IAF) MiG-29 fighter jet that crashed in Rajasthan's Barmer in September 2024.
It also posted an old tweet by Doordarshan reporting the news.
The clarification comes amid a deluge of misinformation from Pakistani handles on X, with many claiming that Pakistan shot down Indian jets and drones in response to the attack.
In retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack, Indian armed forces carried out missile strikes early Wednesday on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold of Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba's base Muridke.
