Less than four months after India and China agreed on a disengagement process following a four-year border standoff, India has opened Demchok—one of the key friction points—for civilian visitors, according to The Indian Express.
This move is part of the Centre’s new Battlefield Tourism initiative, jointly led by the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Tourism, and state governments. The program includes 77 forward locations, with 21 in Arunachal Pradesh, 14 in Ladakh, 11 in Jammu and Kashmir, and seven in Sikkim.
India and China had announced their disengagement agreement on October 21 last year, just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Russia.
Among the newly accessible sites are key locations in Arunachal Pradesh, such as Tawang, Bum La, Gorsam, Lohit, Kameng, and Walong. Ladakh’s Demchok and Galwan—where violent clashes occurred in 2020—are also on the list, along with Pangong Tso, a site of multiple military standoffs since 1962.
Under the initiative, visitors must coordinate with the Indian Army for safety and clearance, especially in high-risk zones. Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Shekhawat stated that a single-window system has been introduced to streamline these permissions. In high-altitude areas, visitors must follow acclimatization protocols.
The Indian Army, in collaboration with state governments and the Ministry of Tourism, has implemented safety measures to ensure visitors' well-being. Officials emphasize that while core operational zones remain restricted, the initiative aims to grant citizens access to historically significant sites where soldiers have displayed exceptional bravery.
By opening these once-restricted areas, the initiative seeks to enhance connectivity, boost tourism, and promote socio-economic development in border regions. The Army has been working closely with local authorities to balance tourism efforts with maintaining high operational readiness.
