Citizens lost over Rs 22,845 crore to cyber criminals in 2024: Govt

Citizens lost more than Rs 22,845.73 crore to cyber criminals in 2024, a staggering increase of nearly 206 per cent from the previous year, Lok Sabha was informed Tuesday.

Responding to a written question, minister of state for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, said that according to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS) operated by the ministry's I4C, "total amount of losses incurred by citizens due to cyber frauds in the entire country" in 2024 was Rs 22,845.73 crore as compared to Rs 7,465.18 crore the previous year. Police used tear gas to disperse angry students in Bangladesh on Tuesday who demanded answers from the interim government after an air force fighter jet crashed into a Dhaka school and killed 31 people, at least 25 of them children.

The children, many aged under 12, were about to return home from class on Monday when the Chinese-manufactured F-7 BGI Bangladesh Air Force jet ploughed into their school and burst into flames, trapping pupils in the fire and debris. The military said it had suffered mechanical failure.

Students from the school and others from nearby colleges protested as two government officials visited the crash site, demanding an accurate death toll and shouting, "Why did our brothers die? We demand answers!" Read here

Mamata Banerjee casts doubt on Dhankhar’s exit citing health reasons

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday raised doubts over the sudden resignation of vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar, hinting at deeper issues beyond his “health”.

On being asked about Dhankhar’s resignation, the chief minister said, “I don't want to make any comment about this. Let's see what happens. He is a healthy man. I think his health is absolutely okay.”

Her remarks came a day after Dhankhar abruptly resigned from his position in a letter to President Droupadi Murmu on the very first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. He cited health reasons and medical advice as reasons behind his shocking resignation. Read here

Air India flight catches fire after landing at Delhi airport

An Air India plane reportedly caught fire shortly after it landed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport on Monday. The aircraft suffered some damage due to the fire.

The Flight AI 315, operating from Hong Kong to Delhi on 22 July 2025, experienced an auxiliary power unit (APU) fire shortly after it had landed and parked at the gate, reported CNN-News18.

However, passengers and crew members disembarked normally and are safe, the Air India spokesperson said in a statement.

“Flight AI315, operating from Hong Kong to Delhi on 22 July 2025, experienced an auxiliary power unit (APU) fire shortly after it had landed and parked at the gate. The incident occurred while passengers had begun disembarking, and the APU was automatically shut down as per system design. There was some damage to the aircraft, however, passengers and crew members disembarked normally, and are safe. The aircraft has been grounded for further investigations and the regulator has been duly notified," the statement said.

Air India says completed inspection of fuel switch locking system on Boeing fleet, no issues found

Private carrier Air India on Tuesday said it has completed "precautionary" inspection of the locking mechanism of the fuel control switch (FCS) on its Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft fleet and no issues were found.

Aviation safety regulator DGCA last week directed airlines to inspect the fuel switch locking system in their Boeing 787 and 737 planes by July 21 after the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) said in its preliminary report that fuel switches were cut off before the Air India plane crash last month.

Air India flight AI 171, operated with Boeing 787-8, en route to London Gatwick, crashed soon after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 of the 242 passengers onboard and another 19 on the ground.
