Citizens lost more than Rs 22,845.73 crore to cyber criminals in 2024, a staggering increase of nearly 206 per cent from the previous year, Lok Sabha was informed Tuesday.

Responding to a written question, minister of state for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, said that according to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS) operated by the ministry's I4C, "total amount of losses incurred by citizens due to cyber frauds in the entire country" in 2024 was Rs 22,845.73 crore as compared to Rs 7,465.18 crore the previous year. Police used tear gas to disperse angry students in Bangladesh on Tuesday who demanded answers from the interim government after an air force fighter jet crashed into a Dhaka school and killed 31 people, at least 25 of them children.

The children, many aged under 12, were about to return home from class on Monday when the Chinese-manufactured F-7 BGI Bangladesh Air Force jet ploughed into their school and burst into flames, trapping pupils in the fire and debris. The military said it had suffered mechanical failure.

Students from the school and others from nearby colleges protested as two government officials visited the crash site, demanding an accurate death toll and shouting, "Why did our brothers die? We demand answers!" Read here

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday raised doubts over the sudden resignation of vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar, hinting at deeper issues beyond his “health”.

On being asked about Dhankhar’s resignation, the chief minister said, “I don't want to make any comment about this. Let's see what happens. He is a healthy man. I think his health is absolutely okay.”

Her remarks came a day after Dhankhar abruptly resigned from his position in a letter to President Droupadi Murmu on the very first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. He cited health reasons and medical advice as reasons behind his shocking resignation. Read here

An Air India plane reportedly caught fire shortly after it landed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport on Monday. The aircraft suffered some damage due to the fire.

The Flight AI 315, operating from Hong Kong to Delhi on 22 July 2025, experienced an auxiliary power unit (APU) fire shortly after it had landed and parked at the gate, reported CNN-News18.

However, passengers and crew members disembarked normally and are safe, the Air India spokesperson said in a statement.

“Flight AI315, operating from Hong Kong to Delhi on 22 July 2025, experienced an auxiliary power unit (APU) fire shortly after it had landed and parked at the gate. The incident occurred while passengers had begun disembarking, and the APU was automatically shut down as per system design. There was some damage to the aircraft, however, passengers and crew members disembarked normally, and are safe. The aircraft has been grounded for further investigations and the regulator has been duly notified," the statement said.

Tejashwi Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly, on Tuesday termed Jagdeep Dhankhar's late-evening resignation as Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman on health grounds "surprising", considering that he had conducted the proceedings of the House so well barely a few hours earlier. The AAP on Tuesday demanded a "clear explanation" from the government for the sudden resignation of former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar, calling it a matter of "serious concern".

Addressing a press conference, Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh questioned the government's "silence" and the "delayed response" from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"We saw that the prime minister posted on X long after the resignation. This delay indicates there was no effort to persuade the vice president to reconsider," Singh said. -- PTI

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman meets President Murmu

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh met President Droupadi Murmu on July 22 (Tuesday).

"Shri Harivansh, Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan," a post on X by the President of India said, sharing the photo of their meet.

This comes a day after Vice President and Chairman of Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar submitted resignation to the President citing health reasons, in the evening of the first day of the Monsoon Session of the Parliament. The President accepted his resignation today.

Dhankhar's resignation and abrupt exit have come as a surprise to many as he presided over the Rajya Sabha proceedings during which he admitted that he received a letter by Opposition members for the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma in cash at home case.

Private carrier Air India on Tuesday said it has completed "precautionary" inspection of the locking mechanism of the fuel control switch (FCS) on its Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft fleet and no issues were found.

Aviation safety regulator DGCA last week directed airlines to inspect the fuel switch locking system in their Boeing 787 and 737 planes by July 21 after the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) said in its preliminary report that fuel switches were cut off before the Air India plane crash last month.

Air India flight AI 171, operated with Boeing 787-8, en route to London Gatwick, crashed soon after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 of the 242 passengers onboard and another 19 on the ground.

The Nagpur airport in Maharashtra received a bomb threat on Tuesday, prompting authorities to conduct an extensive search of the premises, officials said.

Nothing suspicious was found during the search, a senior airport official said. The Airports Authority of India received an email about bomb threat at the Nagpur airport on Tuesday morning.

The information was subsequently communicated to the airport authority here, the official told news agency PTI.

Two children were killed in a mortar explosion while on their way to a religious seminary in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday, as per local sources.

The victims Arafat and Amir, both around six to seven years old, belonged to the Mehsud tribe in Raghza village, located in the jurisdiction of Gomal Bazaar Police Station in Tank district of northwest Pakistan, sources said. The victims were carrying tea for their teacher when the blast occurred, they added.

At least four tourists were killed, two injured, and 15 reported missing after flash floods triggered by a cloudburst hit Gilgit-Baltistan region in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The incident occurred on Monday in Diamer district, sweeping away eight tourist vehicles, Faizullah Faraq, a spokesperson for the regional government, said.

Four bodies, including that of a woman from Lodhran in Pakistan's Punjab province, have been recovered so far, while the injured and deceased were shifted to a local hospital. -- PTI
