One person was killed and five others injured after a bus hit a truck parked on the roadside in Odisha’s Kalahandi district in the early hours of Thursday, police said.

The accident happened around 3.30 am near Charbahal in Koksara police station area, they said.

The private passenger bus was heading to Umerkote in Nabarangpur from Bhubaneswar when the accident happened, they added.

The bus hit the truck parked on the roadside from behind, a police officer said.

Fire services personnel rescued the passengers stuck inside the bus. The injured passengers were admitted to the Junagarh hospital.

“The CM has ordered a magisterial inquiry. Let the report of the inquiry come to the government, and if there were any lapses, then action will be initiated against whoever is found responsible,” Karnataka Home Minister said.

The stampede that took place outside Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, amid celebrations to mark the IPL win of Royal Challengers Bengaluru after an 18-year wait, was mentioned at the Karnataka High Court. The court will hear the matter at 2.30 PM.

West Bengal reported over 100 new COVID cases, according to official data available on Thursday morning.

As per the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 106 new COVID cases were detected in the state in the last 24 hours.

At present, there are 538 active cases in the state, the data showed.

During the same period, 61 people also recovered from the infection, it said.

Two helicopters flew to north Sikkim on Thursday morning as the weather cleared to bring back the more than 100 tourists stranded there for nearly a week, officials said.

The MI-17V5 helicopters left for Chaten in north Sikkim from Pakyong Airport near state capital Gangtok along with personnel from the NDRF and Power Department, and engineers of Airtel, who would work in the rain-ravaged region for restoring essential services, they said.

Around 109 tourists stranded in north Sikkim's Lachung for nearly a week were brought to Chaten for air evacuation, they added.

An anti-encroachment drive was carried out near a Muslim burial ground on Moradabad Road in Chandausi area here, officials said on Thursday.

The operation on Wednesday night was led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vinay Kumar Mishra, and bulldozers were used to remove the encroachments from the ground located next to a railway crossing.

Responding to media questions regarding the action, Mishra said the drive was a continuation of an anti-encroachment campaign launched around six months ago.

Two criminals were injured in a late-night encounter with police near the Sheikh Sarai area of south Delhi, an official said on Thursday.

The duo was riding a motorcycle when police tried to intercept them. The criminals, however, allegedly opened fire, prompting retaliation from the police team. Multiple rounds were exchanged during the encounter, the official said.

Both men were caught and shifted to a hospital for treatment, he said.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday carried out raids at multiple locations in several districts of Jammu and Kashmir as part of its probe into a terror conspiracy case, officials said.

The raids were carried out in Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian, Baramulla and Kupwara districts, the officials said.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday announced that India has been elected to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations for the term 2026-28. He expressed India's commitment to championing development issues and to keep working to strengthen the ECOSOC.

He thanked member states of the UN for their support and trust in India. He also appreciated the efforts made by India's Permanent Mission at the United Nations in New York.

Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday accused Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar of being responsible for the stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru that claimed the lives of 11 and injured 30 others.

Kumaraswamy alleged that the incident was caused by the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister's "impatience, immaturity, and irresponsibility."

Addressing a late-night press conference at his official residence in New Delhi, the Union Minister demanded that "the person responsible for this tragedy must be immediately sacked from the cabinet."

He criticised the Congress government in Karnataka as being run by "arrogant fools" and said, "We have a Chief Minister who is completely inactive. He has no control over the Deputy CM. As for the State Home Minister, there's no point in discussing it. He merely obeys commands."
