Two persons who were allegedly going to slaughter cattle were arrested after an encounter here with police, officials said on Wednesday.

A  Jat Regiment signalman has been sentenced to life for murdering the wife of a fellow soldier in Bareilly.

The court of Sessions Judge Vijendra Tripathi pronounced the verdict on Tuesday after finding Nitesh Pandey guilty of killing fellow personnel Manoj Senapati's wife Sudarshana Senapati (35). The court also imposed a fine of Rs 22,000 on him.

Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC) Hemendra Gangwar said the case dates back to March 13, 2023.

The Chhattisgarh government has issued fresh postings to eight Indian Police Service (IPS) officers and deployed them on the anti-Naxal operations duty in the state, officials said on Wednesday.

The development comes after Akash Girepunje, the additional superintendent of police (ASP-Konta division) in Sukma district, lost his life in a Naxal-planted IED blast on Monday.

All the eight transferred IPS officers, belonging to the 2021 batch, were posted as city superintendents of police (CSP) in different districts, a government official said, adding the state home department issued the transfer order on Tuesday.

A 68-year-old man was burnt to death while trying to control a forest fire in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Wednesday.

Abdul Aziz, a retired government teacher hailing from Panda Khetar village of Dalyote panchayat, voluntarily joined a team of forest officials to extinguish fire in Garn forest in Kalakote sub-division on Tuesday, the officials said.

A multi-utility vehicle carrying a wedding party collided head-on with a truck in Jaipur district early Wednesday, leaving the bride and four others dead, police said.

Eight others were injured in the accident that took place on the Dausa-Manoharpur highway near Bhatkabas village in Raisar area The wedding party was returning from Madhya Pradesh.

The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital.

An elderly man died while his wife was critically injured after an inverter battery exploded inside their house here on Wednesday morning, police said.

The incident occurred in Mardauli village under Sangrampur police station limits.

According to police, the explosion killed 62-year-old Naurang Bahadur Singh on the spot. His wife, 60-year-old Anusuya Singh, suffered severe injuries and was initially taken to the Amethi Community Health Centre.

Authorities launched a demolition drive in the Bhoomiheen camp in southeast Delhi's Govindpuri on Wednesday morning, amid heavy police deployment.

Over 300 jhuggis built on government land in Govindpuri will be demolished, an official said.

A 21-year-old alleged shooter associated with the Sandeep alias Kala Jatheri gang was apprehended late on Monday night following a brief exchange of fire with police personnel near Najafgarh, Delhi Police said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Suhail alias Jaggi, was intercepted by a police team around 10:50 PM while heading towards Kair village from Surehara Chowk, near the Najafgarh-Dhansa Road. According to police, four rounds were exchanged during the encounter: two fired by the accused and two in retaliation by the police party.

Two policemen were suspended here on Tuesday for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 40-year-old man by torturing him and demanding a bribe of Rs 50,000 to avoid action against him, officials said.

Police said the man has been identified as Jeet Kumar alias Jeetu, a native of Kotra in Sajeti area, worked at a private firm in Surat, Gujarat.

Delhi Police has arrested a man who was convicted in a 2015 case of robbery and unnatural offence from Bihar's Khagaria after a brief encounter, an official said on Tuesday.

Md Nasir (36) was arrested from his native village in Bihar after a brief exchange of fire, in which a Delhi Police head constable sustained injury, a senior police officer said.

“On November 30, 2015, the victim had deboarded a train at the Anand Vihar railway station and was heading to the Karkardooma Metro station when the accused and two of his accomplices snatched his mobile phone,” the officer said.

Days after alleged rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl in northeast Delhi's Dayalpur area, a 28-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday after an encounter with police, an official said.

The accused, a resident of Nehru Vihar in Dayalpur, was arrested near Hapur in Uttar Pradesh, the official said, adding that he tried to escape during which he attacked a police constable with a hidden blade before being shot in the leg by police.

Two men have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi district in connection with an attempted robbery of a cumin trader from Gujarat last month, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on May 15 at a hotel located along National Highway-2 in Kokhraj area. According to police, unidentified miscreants tried to snatch a bag from the trader, Bhavesh Kumar Barot.

However, as the miscreants tried to flee, bystanders chased them, prompting the robbers to abandon the bag and escape.
