A  Jat Regiment signalman has been sentenced to life for murdering the wife of a fellow soldier in Bareilly.

The court of Sessions Judge Vijendra Tripathi pronounced the verdict on Tuesday after finding Nitesh Pandey guilty of killing fellow personnel Manoj Senapati's wife Sudarshana Senapati (35). The court also imposed a fine of Rs 22,000 on him.

Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC) Hemendra Gangwar said the case dates back to March 13, 2023.

The Chhattisgarh government has issued fresh postings to eight Indian Police Service (IPS) officers and deployed them on the anti-Naxal operations duty in the state, officials said on Wednesday.

The development comes after Akash Girepunje, the additional superintendent of police (ASP-Konta division) in Sukma district, lost his life in a Naxal-planted IED blast on Monday.

All the eight transferred IPS officers, belonging to the 2021 batch, were posted as city superintendents of police (CSP) in different districts, a government official said, adding the state home department issued the transfer order on Tuesday.

Around 150 structures, including houses and small commercial establishments, were demolished to facilitate road widening and infrastructure development along the Surankote-Bufliaz road stretch in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, officials said on Wednesday.

All sites where demolitions were carried out fall within the area acquired for the project, they said.

India News Live: 2 cops suspended in Kanpur for demanding bribe, torturing man who later killed self

Two policemen were suspended here on Tuesday for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 40-year-old man by torturing him and demanding a bribe of Rs 50,000 to avoid action against him, officials said.

Police said the man has been identified as Jeet Kumar alias Jeetu, a native of Kotra in Sajeti area, worked at a private firm in Surat, Gujarat.

On Monday, he had gone to his in-laws’ home in Akbarpur, Kanpur Dehat, to bring back his wife who had left the house following a domestic dispute. However, his father-in-law, a village head, lodged a complaint against him at the Kotra police post.

Jeetu was summoned to the post for a settlement, where Sub-Inspector Gaurav Shalya and Head Constable Ravi allegedly tortured him in the presence of his in-laws and demanded Rs 50,000 to resolve the matter, Deputy Commissioner of Police Deependra Nath Chaudhar said.
