Delhi News Highlights: August already wettest month for Delhi this year

August has emerged as the wettest month of the year so far in the national capital, with rainfall around 60 per cent above the normal.

On Tuesday, continuous showers led to waterlogging and traffic jams in several parts of the city.

The normal monthly average rainfall for August is 200.8 mm, while so far this month the city has recorded 321.4 mm, which is nearly 60 per cent above the normal, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data. -- PTI

On damage due to heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh, CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu says, "It has been raining a lot since yesterday. Kullu-Manali, Kangra district, and Una district have faced significant damage. We have safely evacuated all the people from there. However, that is their place, and their crops have suffered significant damage. The government will continue to monitor the situation."

Additionally, on the closure of the educational institutions, he says, "We have left the decision to the deputy commissioner. He can give the order to close the institution wherever it is needed..."

Continuous heavy rainfall across Doda district has triggered landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones, leading to the closure of several link roads as well as stretches of the national highway.

"There is now a healthy competition between states for investment. I keep telling the states to become pro-active and work on single window clearances. The states with neat and clean policies encourages investors. Every state should take advantage of this. Even the investors should be confused about which state to invest in," PM Modi said.

“When I was in Gujarat, I paid attention to even the smallest things, from visiting cards in Japanese and dubbing videos in Japanese, to bringing Japanese restaurants and developing golf courses. We now teach Japanese in our schools and colleges. These efforts are deepening people-to-people connect, and companies like Maruti should also increase youth exchange programmes. Our efforts today will play an important role in achieving Viksit Bharat 2047," said PM Modi.

"My understanding of local is simple. I do not care who is investing, either in dollars or pounds. However, it should be made in India...Swadeshi should be our life mantra; swadeshi is where money is invested by anybody but work is done by Indians," he said.

“Battery is the most critical part of EVs. Till a few years back, batteries were being imported, but we laid the foundation for TDS to make battery cells in India. This will strengthen localisation and the EV ecosystem. EVs are not just alternatives anymore. They can solve many problems. Maruti has even manufactured a hybrid ambulance under the PM E-DRIVE scheme," said PM Modi.

PM Modi said, "The production of lithium-ion battery cells and electrodes will also start at TDS Lithium-Ion Battery Gujarat, which is a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso and Suzuki."

Speaking about Maruti, he said it entering teenage today. He said it will spread its wings in the near future. "When I was the Gujarat CM, we allotted land to Maruti Suzuki. Vision even then was to make in India," he said.

Out electronics production in the past decade has grown 500%. Mobile phone production 2,700% in comparison to 2014. Defence production had grown by 200%".

The U.S. dollar surrendered gains in early trading in Asia on Tuesday after U.S. President Donald Trump said he was removing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from her position for allegedly committing mortgage fraud.

The dollar index fell 0.3% to 98.187 after Trump made the announcement in a letter to Cook that he posted on social media. The pullback came after the U.S. currency had registered its biggest daily gain of the month on Monday. Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to cloudy skies and showers on Tuesday morning. The rain brought some relief from the humid weather, as the Indian Meteorological Department has forecast cloudy skies for Tuesday. A yellow alert has been issued for Gurugram and Faridabad.

The rain also had an impact on air travel. Indigo Airlines issued an advisory to passengers, asking them to check their flight status before leaving for the airport. “It is a rainy start in Delhi, with gentle showers expected through the day. Roads may be slower than usual, so if you are flying, do set out early. Our airport teams are on standby to assist,” the airline said.
