Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister held extensive discussions with Argentine President Javier Milei, focusing on expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, energy, and mining. Both leaders acknowledged the growing potential of the strategic partnership between India and Argentina and resolved to take ties to “greater heights”.
This is the first bilateral visit to Argentina by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly six decades.
PM Modi’s visit also marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and five years since the partnership was elevated to a strategic level.
The leaders reviewed progress in key sectors and identified new opportunities for cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi also pitched for deeper collaboration in the pharmaceutical sector and proposed easing regulatory pathways for Indian medicines to enter the Argentine market. He highlighted India’s strength in producing high-quality, affordable pharmaceuticals that could benefit the Argentine population.
Other areas of discussion included the possibility of joint initiatives in digital innovation, defence manufacturing, green energy, and the use of drones. President Milei expressed interest in India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and the two sides explored prospects of technological cooperation in digital financial infrastructure.
The meeting also saw India seeking Argentina’s support in expanding the India-MERCOSUR preferential trade agreement, which could help deepen economic ties with the South American bloc.
